About this model
Nike's Air Force 1 goes back to 1982, when designer Bruce Kilgore drew it as a basketball shoe. It was the first basketball shoe with Nike Air inside, and the name points to Air Force One, the plane that carries the US president. Nike stopped making it in 1984 and brought it back in 1986. The '07 in the name marks the version Nike introduced in 2007. Next to the 2001 version it looks a little bulkier, with a squarer, taller toe box.
The build is simple. The upper is leather with a perforated toe box for some airflow, and the collar is padded. Nike Air sits inside a foam midsole, a setup Nike first built for performance basketball. A lab review that cut the shoe in half found the Air unit running the full length of the sole inside a firm foam carrier, with 31.7 mm of stack under the heel and 17.2 mm under the forefoot. The rubber outsole keeps the pivot circles from its basketball days, which Nike says are there for traction and durability.
It is not a light shoe. The same testers weighed 465 grams for a men's US 9, more than any Dunk, Air Jordan or Air Max they had measured, high-tops included. They rate it stable, but they report a long break-in and leather that creases, and they would not wear it all day. On fit, Nike says the Air Force 1 '07 runs large and recommends going half a size down.
