About this model
New Balance launched the 992 in 2006, the year the company turned 100. Jonathan Bacon designed it as the follow-up to the 991, and his first concept sketches date from 2004. It kept the suede-and-mesh build of the 99X family, which opened with the 990 in 1982, but the shape became broader and rounder. The first run ended in 2010, and the 992 came back in 2020. As in 2006, it belongs to the Made in USA collection, which New Balance defines as shoes with a domestic value of 70 percent or more.
ABZORB sits in both the heel and the forefoot, and New Balance credits it with absorbing impact by combining cushioning with compression resistance. It is set in a midsole that pairs ENCAP, which the brand describes as soft foam inside a durable polyurethane rim, with C-CAP. The outsole is NDurance rubber, and reflective accents catch the light. In 2006 the shoe used ABZORB SBS shock absorption, which took three years to develop, in the heel, the forefoot and the insole. For the 2020 return New Balance replaced the ABZORB insole with an OrthoLite sock liner.
Steve Jobs made the grey 992 part of his everyday uniform. The first collaboration on the returning model came from Joe Freshgoods and was released during the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago. The core version comes in four plain colours: grey, black, navy and white.
